Top Ten Alternative Artists of All Time
80How do you pick the top alternative artists?
Selecting only 10 top bands to choose as your top alternative bands of all time is a daunting task, and you maybe asking yourself how or why each of the top alternative artists on my list got there. So let me tell you.
Personal preference obviously plays a big role in selecting my top picks but that's not all that went into it. In fact, I'm not above putting an artist on my list that I don't even listen to, if they have had a big impact on the music world. In order to be a top alternative artist of all time the band has to have had a big impact on the alternative genre as it is today. So I also put a heavy weight on how many other alternative bands they have influenced and how groundbreaking their work was for their time. If they opened the door to a new style that wasn't popular before they came along, they get big points in my book whether I like that style or not.
I didn't number this list or place them in any particular order, because who am I to say who the very best alternative band of all time is? The best I can do is narrow it down to the ten top alternative bands. I don't expect everyone to agree with my picks so I'd love to know what you think. Please take a moment to vote on who you think is the best alternative artist is from my list and use the comments section of the bottom of the page to tell me who you think I missed. I hope you enjoy reading this list as much as I enjoyed creating it! If you want to see other genres check out my top tens of music homepage.

Peligo, a former Dead Kennedys drummer, replaced Irons for a short time until Smith, the permantant replacement was found. Slovak was replaced by Frusciante a lesser known guitarist of the time. Seems like RHCP is taking the lead in the poll :)
Great list, but Nirvana should be on there instead of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Great list!!! The Smiths, Joy Division and Radiohead are a few of my fave bands.. keep the music hubs comin!
MICHAEL JACKSON FOR EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great List- How about some females? Great List of bands!!! I agree with U2- older stuff and Red Hot Chili Peppers past and present. Do you think Grunge Rock fits into alternative- Like Temple of Dog- or that more just Alternative Rock? Your list seems more like New wave/punkish? I was in love with the Cocteau Twins- they are way off the charts. Maybe Blondie- just the way she dressed was crazy????
Very tough to decide the top ten. I love to see The Pixies up there! Great list!
Finally a list of band on HubPages I agree with. great work man. Just so you know I voted for Joy Division, but I also love Radiohead :)
I agree with Kori Lee... There are some wonderful girl bands. Check out my hub on great bands from Japan and learn about some of them.... granted, they don't have the following yet of these bands, but you might enjoy their music. I voted for David Bowie but Sonic Youth -- especially the SRV series -- is also up there!
Love it. I am going to have to go with the Pixies, but with regard to influence...can Bowie ever be beaten? Come on! It's Bowie. He is like the old Chinese kung fu master of the Indie/Alternative music world. Didn't we all spring from the loins of Ziggy?
Thank you for including The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and U2 in the list. Voted up for this hub. Great choice of alternative rock bands! \m/
With the exception of the exclusion of Nirvana, I can't argue with this list. But I would also exclude either RHCP or U2 (I like U2, just don't know if I truly consider them alternative, but I guess that is a whole different argument). So I would possibly be given flak for those exclusion. Also if you are including Punk as a form of alternative music you don't get much more influential than Ramones or The Clash. But it is tough to narrow this list down to 10 and your arguments where solid.
great lists! voted U2 as my favorite alternative artists for all time :)
It's hard to find fault with any of the selections on this list. I could live without the Chili Peppers there, and it's difficult to image this list without Nirvana, but keeping this to 10 is a near impossible task.
